Prishtina is young, friendly, and full of personality. It is the kind of capital where you can sip espresso with locals in the morning, visit a striking modernist library in the afternoon, and finish the day at a rooftop bar with skyline views. Here are the top things to do in Prishtina if you are visiting for the first time.
1. Newborn Monument
Unveiled on the day Kosovo declared independence in 2008, the Newborn Monument is the city's most iconic landmark. The typography is repainted almost every year to mark anniversaries or highlight social causes, so it looks different each time you visit.
2. National Library of Kosovo
Love it or hate it, the National Library is impossible to miss. Its white geometric domes and dark metal mesh make it one of the most photographed buildings in the Balkans. It is a 2-minute walk from ZOE Hotel.
3. Mother Teresa Boulevard
This pedestrian boulevard is the beating heart of Prishtina. Cafes, fountains, street musicians, and strolling locals make it the best place to feel the city's rhythm. Stop for a macchiato, that is what locals do.
4. The Old Bazaar
For a taste of the old city, head to the streets around the Great Hammam and the Sultan Mehmed Fatih Mosque. You will find craft shops, tea houses, and traditional architecture.
5. Ethnological Museum
Set in a 19th century Ottoman house, this small museum gives a gentle introduction to traditional Kosovan life, clothing, and crafts. The guided tour is a highlight.
6. Germia Park
When the city heat gets intense, head to Germia. It is a huge forested park on the edge of the capital with walking trails, picnic areas, and in summer an open-air pool. It is also the traditional home of Sunny Hill Festival.
7. Bear Sanctuary Prishtina
About 20 kilometers outside the city, this sanctuary is home to brown bears rescued from tiny cages at restaurants across Kosovo. It is a powerful and moving visit, and a very different way to spend an afternoon.
8. Bill Clinton Boulevard and Statue
Whatever your politics, the 3-meter statue of Bill Clinton is a piece of modern history that tells you a lot about Kosovo's recent story. You can pair it with a coffee at the nearby Hillary clothing store.
9. Gracanica Monastery
About 15 minutes outside of Prishtina, this 14th century Serbian Orthodox monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an architectural gem. Easy to combine with a half-day trip out of the city.
10. Eat traditional Kosovan food
Try flija, a layered pancake-like dish cooked over open fire, or tave e Elbasanit, slow-baked lamb with yogurt. Burek is the unofficial breakfast of Kosovo, eaten with a glass of yogurt drink.
11. Cafe culture
Prishtina has one of the highest cafes-per-capita ratios in Europe. Coffee is more than a drink here, it is a social ritual. Spend an afternoon hopping between cafes on Pejton and Soba Street.
12. Day trips from Prishtina
- Prizren, the historic cultural capital, around 90 minutes south
- Rugova Canyon and Peja for mountains and waterfalls
- Gjakova Old Bazaar, beautifully restored after the 1999 war
- Mirusha Waterfalls for a summer swim
